What Makes a Difference in Leadership Development -- A View from the Field

by Mohan Sikka - Last month, my colleagues Jean Lobell, Carolyn Sauvage-Mar and I published an article on CRE’s Leadership Caucus in The Nonprofit Quarterly.

The eight-month caucus is CRE’s signature development program for non-profit leaders. We have been offering the caucus for almost six years now, and the article captures our own “learnings from the field” – why we think this kind of extended leadership program works, what benefits participants take away, and our hopes for leadership work going forward. One exciting takeaway for us was that “multiple learning methods” working together are critical to the success of the caucus. In other words, issue discussions, peer support, “learning by doing,” evaluation & feedback and extended case studies all reinforce each other to create a rich and impactful learning environment for participants.

The study that led to this article was supported by The New York Community Trust, although a long list of funders has been supporting the participation of non-profit leaders in the caucus.
