Leadership Development: Brownsville Multi-Service Family Health Center
The Challenge
The Brownsville Multi-Service Family Health Center (BMS) provides primary and specialty healthcare and social services to thousands of people in central Brooklyn. BMS and CRE had already collaborated on many projects including Board development and planning. BMS turned to CRE again during a period of expansion to enhance cohesion, collaboration, and efficiency across its senior management team.
What We Did
CRE provided a mix of training and coaching to help BMS strengthen its management team, which supervises staff members across ten service sites. We designed and led a management retreat for 25 BMS managers with the goal of helping them recognize their patterns of interaction and apply this understanding to improve communication and teamwork. We developed a composite profile of the management team’s leadership practices, which served as a guidepost for future organizational reflection and growth and identified priorities for subsequent coaching sessions with senior managers. Finally, we coached each of BMS’s eight senior managers to address a range of internal challenges and professional goals, and to enhance practices for working together across departments, service areas, and sites.
Impact
CRE fortified the leadership skills of the entire management team to make the most of their talent and expertise while shepherding BMS through a series of program and capital expansions. Working with CRE enabled BMS to increase collaboration and communication among teams in order to improve services and boost productivity across the organization. BMS’s investment in responsive, practical tools and support increased the team’s effectiveness and success as it expanded to provide more services to more people.
“CRE’s leadership development services brought us closer together as a team, which shows up in our ability to get projects done. We come to decisions faster and move more quickly toward execution. CRE made an enormous difference in accelerating the process of improving the quality and quantity of our work as a team.”
