CAREpacity™: Weekly Wellness Tips for Nonprofit Leaders | Mental Health Month
If you’re reading this, chances are you’re someone who cares deeply—about your work, your team, your mission, and your community. And yet, even with all that care, it might sometimes feel like the weight of leadership or nonprofit work is heavier than ever.
You're not alone. May is Mental Health Awareness Month—a time to reflect on the well-being of those who tirelessly serve our communities. In CRE’s latest Community Pulse Survey, wellness ranked as the #2 priority for nonprofit staff and leaders, second only to funding. This comes as no surprise: nonprofit professionals give so much to the world—how can we ensure they have the capacity not just to serve, but to thrive?Over the next few weeks, we’re excited to share highlights from CAREpacity—our framework for sustaining both people and purpose in nonprofit work. Each post will offer a bite-sized, actionable tip to help you nurture resilience, strengthen team dynamics, and build a healthier, more human-centered workplace.
This Week’s CAREpacity Action Tip
From our CEO, Tiloma Jayasinghe
“Take 10 minutes for a ‘connection huddle’ with your team. Have each person share one challenge they’re facing and one support they need. It’s a small practice that helps build trust, empathy, and team well-being. End with a moment to breathe together, reflect on any follow-ups, and thank each person for showing up. A clear close ensures care becomes action, not just airtime.”
Rounding out a reflective moment with care and intention is what turns a "check-in" into a "shift-in". It’s the difference between a pause and a pivot. Closing your connection huddle by acknowledging what’s been shared, naming helpful next steps, offering appreciation, or committing to follow-up is how connection becomes collective care, especially when emotions surface. This kind of closing brings steadiness, safety and forward motion.
